Minimum Term, Notice Period, Activation Fee: The Fine Print, Decoded
Three lines that outlast every promo
🕸️ THE THREE NUMBERS NOBODY READS
Every Swiss mobile contract, stripped of its poetry, comes down to three numbers:
1. The minimum term: how long the handcuffs stay on
2. The notice period: how far ahead you must announce your escape
3. The activation fee: the entry ticket nobody advertises
All three hide in the fine print. All three also sit in plain type on the back of every MatchMyMobile card, under COSTS & TERMS.
I read all 177 contracts at once (July 2026) so you don't have to. Here's the whole market. 📜
“Read before signing!”
🔓 MINIMUM TERM: THE MARKET HAS (MOSTLY) MOVED ON
Good news first: no lock-in is the norm now. 101 of 177 plans (57%) have no minimum term at all. Sign in January, vanish in March, nobody blinks.
The rest: 49 plans still cuff you for 24 months, another 11 for 12, a few for just one or two, and the last 8 don't publish a clear term. That's a question to ask BEFORE signing.
The plot twist: the chains cluster around the juiciest lifetime promos: several of the biggest "forever" discounts come in 24-month editions. That's the real trade on the table: months of your freedom as payment for a permanently lower price.
Sometimes that trade is genuinely good! Just make it on purpose. The card back says "No minimum" or names the months; the "No commitment" filter on the Find page shows only the free spirits. 🕊️
⏰ NOTICE PERIOD: THE QUIET MONTH-THIEF
Even with no minimum term, you can't vanish at midnight: every escape needs a head start. Two months' notice is the Swiss standard: 117 of 177 plans. A lucky few ask for one month, or none.
What two months means in practice: decide to leave on March 5th, and you'll typically pay through the end of May.
This is the number that quietly picks switchers' pockets. The classic: find a better plan in November, cancel in November, and pay for the old plan into January while the new one already runs.
The move: read the NOTICE row before you sign, and set the calendar reminder the DAY you decide to switch, not the week you finally get around to it. 📅
"No minimum term" means the door is unlocked; the notice period is how long the hallway is.
🎟️ ACTIVATION FEE: THE UNADVERTISED ENTRY TICKET
The least-advertised number in Swiss mobile: 89 of 177 plans (50%) charge an activation fee. 57 wave you through for free, and 31 don't state it clearly.
Our data tracks whether activation is free or paid; the exact amount hides in each provider's checkout, and it can bite, sometimes a meaningful chunk of a budget plan's yearly savings.
Two rules:
1. If the card's ACTIVATION row says "Paid", look the amount up BEFORE you fall for the monthly price
2. Weigh it against the yearly saving: a one-time fee on a plan you keep for years shrinks to a rounding error; on a plan you might leave in six months, it doesn't
Providers regularly waive activation fees in promos. If the timing is yours to choose, wait for one. 🎫
✅ THE 10-SECOND FINE-PRINT SCAN
Before any signature, flip the card and read three rows:
1. MIN. DURATION: "No" or a number. A number should buy you something back (usually a lifetime promo; see the price article)
2. NOTICE: almost always 2 months. Plan your escape around it
3. ACTIVATION: "Paid"? Find the amount before checkout
Then filter the Find page by "No commitment" and sort by Best value: freedom and price, ranked together.
The fine print never shrank. We just printed it bigger. 💪
